Vestibular Physiotherapy (BPPV)

Vestibular Physiotherapy (BPPV)

Dizziness can be very scary and have a major impact on daily functioning. A common and treatable cause is BPPV (Benign Paroxysmal Position Dizziness). As a physiotherapist, we can sometimes remedy this form of dizziness quickly and effectively with targeted tests and treatments.

BPPV state is a disorder of the vestibular system in the inner ear and one of the most common causes of sudden, short-term vertigo. Dizziness typically occurs with changes in head position, such as turning over in bed, leaning forward, looking up, or standing up from a lying position.

The cause of BPPV lies in small calcium crystals (otoliths) that have come out of their normal position and have ended up in one of the semicircular canals of the vestibular organ. When the head moves, these crystals interfere with normal stimulus processing, leading to a short-term but intense sense of rotation, sometimes combined with nausea or an uncertain feeling.

As a physiotherapist, we specialize in examining and treating BPPV. Using specific clinical tests, such as positional tests, we identify which channel is involved and which side the problem is on. Based on this, we apply targeted reposition maneuvers then (such as the Epley, Semont or BBQ maneuver), with the aim of guiding the detached crystals back to their correct place.

These treatments are safe, scientifically based and often very effective: for many patients, the symptoms decrease or disappear after just one or a few sessions. In addition, we also provide advice and explanations so that you understand what is happening and how to deal with any residual complaints. If necessary, we will further guide you with balance exercises to rebuild confidence in exercise.

Do you suffer from dizziness when you make certain head movements? Then BPPV could be a possible cause — and physiotherapy can help you regain stability and security in life.
